Rnsrk

The name means nothing;
I’ve no idea why it was chosen
or what it’s intended symbolism could be.

I tell myself
I’ve made peace with “Rnsrk”;
I feel for him and his struggles.

All of that is true,
but when I see those letters,
that face
returning from across the planet
to lunge back
into my world
I shudder.

I’m making too much of this.
I don’t want them to read this.
I don’t want them to know
how much this still hurts me,
even after almost seven months.

“Fuck.”, I curse,
which immediately makes me smile.

Fucking “Rnsrk”
is what got us into this mess in the first place.

For A & Z – who I won’t share this with.

See You Next Tuesday

My ex-husband’s wife is a cunt.

She messages me
about appropriating my memories
in a collage in which she dreams
I never existed.

She finds it so fantastic
that she attended a bar in the ‘90’s
where her husband was dancing
in a cavernous Detroit Ramada Inn.

Do I have any pictures without him holding me,
she asks?

No. I don’t.
I took him there
on our first date
in December 1995.

But I do have some pictures
that she can’t erase me from…

That night he climbed into my bed
and begged me to mesh
nakedly together
as I snapped photos
and told him I would not be his excuse
to sabotage his relationship
with this woman.

Aaron says this is because I have standards.
I doubt she would see it that way.

But I will not surrender my memories
and she…
will never know.

Another poem originating from April 2017 scribblings on a train.

Please Fuck Me Over

I wake and I dream you
exploring attraction…

I writhe / slide inside you
to devise satisfaction…

I fear my own lust
as I yearn for betrayal…

I paint you the saint
to my martyred portrayal…

I cast you as monster
and victim and savior…

I need your desire
your “tricked him” behavior…

I need my destruction
amid controversy…

Your sex exploration
as castration mercy…

We’re two of a kind;
two sides of a whole…

We appear to surrender;
we’re both in control…

But the threat of deception
is cocaine and candy…

The thrill of perception
like a thought vigilante…

Wanders my brain
as it makes sex connections…

And leaves me deprived
of good sense or erections.

These Questions

Waking up without Aaron,
empty bedroom
with flashbacks
of desperately frenzied fucking
just hours before…
I’m always reminded
of my single sexual experience with Jeff
in his Grandfather’s basement.

Waking alone then…
I had been devastated.

What did he think and feel
as he disentangled himself
from my sleeping
naked
freshly fucked form?

Did he smile?
Did he regret?
Was he afraid of my morning after reaction?

I’ve never asked these questions before.

Did he snuggle against me
as his cum simmered inside me?

Did he kiss me goodbye?

These questions have never haunted me
as they do today.

“mad men who remember”
are lonely.

Did he dress in the basement?
Did he shower?
How many other men had he left in this manner?
Who were they?
Did they hear about me?
If so, were they jealous? Or maybe excited?
How many others were there after me?

I have no way of knowing.

My only bridge to that knowledge
is tenuous at best.

“Don’t fall in the river!”

At least my mad man remembers something.

I doubt he could answer my questions…

Perhaps we share that bed
in dream fragments
that he’s unable to decipher?

Or maybe he remembers everything
and keeps it to himself;
thinking it a dream
and terrified that I won’t remember?

He loved me.
I know that much.

He was beautiful
and he wanted me.

That sort of makes it bearable,
doesn’t it?

Those unendurable unanswered questions
are made beautiful by what we were together
and what we chose to do with the time that we had.

This theory is the only answer that I have.

Much of this was scribbled in a notebook on a train, on April 27, 2017. I always meant to return to this notebook and complete what I’d haphazardly written there. I didn’t expect it would take nearly a year to do so, but here we are.

For Jeff, who casted a long shadow,
and for Aaron – my partner in all things.

All Our Tomorrows

Before I was fully aware
you were there…

Before you existed
I tried not to care…

Before I woke up then
with you there beside me…

Before we broke up
with you still deep inside me…

Before you surrendered
I ruined the moment…

Before you engendered
what became my atonement…

When you whispered confessions
of love & of sorrow…

All that before our todays
and tomorrows.

Salvation Endeth After Nothing

The best actor tonight
reminded me of you;
I thought to speak this
but then remembered
your cruel insanity
and the way you cut me
before cowardly running
away to your drugs;
your marriage of lies and pain,
denial and hope,
sadness and despair.

I wanted to invite you to our party,
the way I always reach out and invite you,
but having removed yourself from my life
I can’t extend the invitation
which you confusingly attested
had never been offered in the past…
even though I always welcomed you
and sought to join our worlds together.

You called me the night that your father died
in October 2011,
and when I inquired,
you said he’d have been happy to have me there,
but then there were no words or information given.

I invited you camping for a night in 2016
and you agreed but then your future fiance
blackmailed you into staying behind.

You asked me to take photographs
of a famed NYC locale which I spent
a day reaching to amuse you,
only to share them with no response whatsoever.

I invited, again & again,
and you cancelled,
made excuses,
ignored or hid for no reason
I’ve been informed of.

Every time I reached out,
you were grateful,
but refused to touch.

Until the night came of The Body Politic when you accused,
expelling your poison laced accusations
with no possibility for my response,
despite years shared in conversation,
dedication and nearly 16 years after
the most perfect kiss that I’ll have ever given.

That night I chose not to follow you.
Not again.
I will not chase you simply because you’ve chosen to run.
I will not struggle through your shit
just because you feel like being an asshole.

If you reach out to me
I will be there,
but I don’t have the strength
to force you to see reason
or remember how I have championed you.

If I’m lucky I’ll hear from you again someday
but I suspect I will only hear of your untimely end.

You were out of your mind on junk
the entire time I knew you
but I just couldn’t see it.

I see it now
and no matter how much I try
I can’t stop loving you.

The only difference is
I love myself now too
and I deserve better
than to suffer for the choices that you’ve made.

Wake the fuck up!

Visions of Loss

Part I:

“Don’t. Don’t do this.”

He whimpers
and I wonder if I ever dreaded such desire
so much or so unconvincingly,
but then as waves of shimmering memory
crash down upon us
I know that I was once
as fearful and thirsty
as this unsteady stripling
cursed by his impetuous prick.

The tremble in his voice tells me everything.

How many times have I
heard that quivering?

Enough to know what will happen next.

Enough to know that he’ll kiss me
for the first time before we leave
this place and that his world will
never be the same,
although others may never know.

I wonder if he’ll be clumsy,
fearfully failing
and requiring my lessons?

I’ve never been a very good teacher.

But I needn’t have worried.
His inaugural kiss is all
skillful struggle & instinct;
like he’s remembering
a previously forgotten lyric
which he sings into me,
the movement resonating
with my own dimly recalled
early fumblings –
old ghosts coming to light
and making experienced virgins of us both.

Part II:

Years unfurl before us
and we continue to cross paths, if not swords…
never quite friends, but never enemies either.

We are could-have-been-lovers
who never really liked one another…
or maybe I want him desperately
but have never admitted it to him,
never admitted it to myself,
and I protect this secret
with a feigned indifference.

Perhaps he wanted me too once,
but the injurious nature of his initiation
was too overwhelming;
too persistently all knowing,
causing him to deny any self identified failing
as commonplace as an honest, inexhaustible,
uncontrollable lust.

The night I find him in the cemetery
with a new student
he actually drags the boy over to me
to tell me that Ian is dead.

He kisses the boy goodbye,
all casual and masterful now
before he tags along with tears
captured in his long black lashes.

When he reaches for my hand,
I allow this silent sign language apology…
as we stumble through a midnight city
that once witnessed our virginal beginnings.

And as the sun threatens to wake us
from our surreal remembering,
he pulls me to him with eyes closed…
desperate to feel the familiar,
if shockingly innocent touch of my skin on his,
rather than the aching emptiness
our former brother once inhabited.

I don’t want this, I think,
this isn’t how I’ve wanted him at all…
yet I surrender to him
like the tide
pulled unfailingly
by the moon
and his sway.

A killing kindness
that murders us both.

Part III:

16 years
and he doesn’t recognize me
on the underground.

I can’t blame him;
I actually don’t recognize myself
and I lack the reflection
of his distant, unchanging gaze.

I watch him watching others
but feel no need to illuminate him
as I flow out and beyond him…
Like I’m someone who never drowned in those icy depths.

I pretend and become
a formerly drunken sailor,
now sober, awake,
and ignorant of all that took place that long night before,
save a few vague images
and the phantom bruising smudge
of a lingering question,
raised by the harshest of realities.

We once lost and found ourselves
within each other…
within the loss of innocence
and the commingling of grief,
but now,
here in this place
beneath a sea of inspiring destruction,
what we discovered
in that stilted, tilted, ordinary wonderland
has been forgotten.

We drowned in the flood of all that came after,
and though we may find ourselves again (and again)
in the eyes of flaming strangers,
the fire which burned within us has been lost forever,
save in dreams
which melt away
every day as we wake.

Stained Glass Forest

In the sanctum of surrender
playing holy water sports…

Under magnifying glass
reversing grade A book reports…

There’s a blood stain from a virgin
counting sheep in fields of green…

And she spills her seman whistle
as she dreams of love supreme…

But the nightmare gore that drips
from deep inside her broken soul…

Is the church’s sacred sacrament:
excess within control…

Contradicting everything
in screams we all must witness…

Benediction boxing ring
is cream of Christ on Christmas.

Mother Hydra

Taking in the printer
pricey breaths at
lake do flake us.

Shaking in the winter
icy depths that
ache to break us.

Reaction deep
and all black sheep
ignore the trip to nothing.

Subtract a beat
and fall asleep
before we slip to pumping.

Talking into madness
died divide
is meant to be.

Walking into blackness
side by side
we went to sea.

And scared beseech the slaves
we bring her Christians
in our test.

And there beneath the waves
we linger glisten
in our deaths.

Tigers & Bears

Unseen / unheard
they’re exposed
fully frontal…

I have observed
them in shadows
and jungle…

Witnessed
invisible men
in the park…

Stiffness
is critical then
in the dark…

Compliance
in riders in pairs
as they writhe…

Liars
and tigers and bears
then goodbye.
