Agent Carter (January 6, 2015 – March 1, 2016)
Set in an alternate universe in which Peggy Carter and Steve Rogers do not end up together, this 18 episode series follows up on “Captain America: The First Avenger” (which was mainly set between 1942-1945) with events set in 1946 & 1947 over 18 episodes in two seasons. The series introduces the origins of the Black Widow and Winter Soldier programs, along with the discovery of the Darkforce (known as Zero Matter in the series), which later appears in “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” (a series set in this same universe) and also has ties to Marvel characters like Doctor Strange and Tyrone Johnson (from “Cloak & Dagger”).
The story being told here, which reveals what would have happened if Peggy had lived her life without Steve feels like intrinsic piece of the puzzle. It also helps that it features several returning actors / characters from the Infinity Saga:
Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Stan Lee as the Watcher Informant, Toby Jones as Arnim Zola, Neal McDonough as Timothy “Dum Dum” Dugan,
and James D’Arcy as Edwin Jarvis (from “Avengers: Endgame”), with Costa Ronin as a young Anton Vanko (from “Iron Man 2”) & the introduction of Enver Gjokaj as Daniel Sousa, whose fate is revealed in a later multiversal project.
To me this series feels like essential viewing due to the talent involved and the original intention for the series to be set in the 616 Universe, which means that all of the continuity from Agent Carter was intended to be part of that universe. Returning actors and characters from The Infinity Saga are informative and impressive, and in my opinion, should not be missed. Additionally, the later “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” series inhabits a similar space and features even more Infinity Saga elements, providing satisfying endings for multiple characters, including elements introduced here.
