The Kurtzman Era Part 07: Starfleet Academy

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy (2026 – 2027)

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is an American television series created by Gaia Violo for the streaming service Paramount+. The finale of Star Trek: Picard in 2402 seemed to set up a new TV series aboard a new iteration of the Enterprise, which sadly, never came to be. Instead we jump ahead many hundreds of years into the future to this series, which follows the first new class of Starfleet cadets in over a century as they come of age and train to be officers.

The Doctor (from Voyager and Prodigy) is back! And there are many, many references to (I think) all of the previous Trek shows. We also learn about something called “The Burn” which occurred in 3069, which caused widespread devastation. The new cadets introduced here are said to be the first Academy class to return to the San Francisco campus in more than 120 years – meaning there may have been other cadets in the past but they couldn’t attend the classic Earth Academy as seen in multiple previous Treks. We meet many new characters, including Oded Fehr as Admiral Charles Vance. Ad Astra Per Aspera!

233 Starfleet Academy S01E02 Beta Test

We are introduced to Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) who is instructing the cadets in Temporal Mechanics, something studied in previous Treks and a job that this teacher seems more than qualified to teach as it is revealed that she is a time traveler.

How and why did Jett Reno travel in time – and from when?

Jett Reno and Charles Vance both return here.

Charles Vance returns and we learn how the Burn affected the Klingons. Qo’noS and other Klingon-controlled planets were rendered uninhabitable after The Burn due to massive dilithium refinery explosions, leaving billions dead and only eight Klingon houses still intact. The former Klingon Empire then came to be referred to as the Klingon Diaspora.

Jay-Den grew up with his family on Krios Prime, a Klingon colony first established in TNG S04E24 “The Mind’s Eye.”, while Krios Prime itself also featured in Enterprise S02E11 (“Precious Cargo”) and TNG S05E21 (“The Perfect Mate”).

The secondary story on the Federation News Report screen reads, “Ni’Var Council Meets with Hirogen Delegation Ahead of the Delta Quadrant Summit.” The Hirogen were a Delta Quadrant hunter species which featured in 10 episodes of Voyager and one episode of Picard; they have also previously been mentioned in a further 8 episodes (of Voyager and Picard). But Ni’Var is new.

The Aaron Satie Debate Competition instituted by Starfleet Academy was named after Judge Aaron Satie, who was perhaps the most famous judge in Starfleet history and the father of Starfleet Rear Admiral Norah Satie (TNG S04E21 “The Drumhead”).

The Doctor says that he debated himself into existence, which could be a reference to various episodes of Star Trek: Voyager, with one example being the arbitration over his right to control his own artistic works in Star Trek: Voyager S07E20 (“Author, Author”).

Two of the potential debate topics suggested by the Doctor are the new government on Betazed (as established in S01E02 “Beta Test”), as well as the geo-political impact of something called “The Emerald Chain”.

What is Ni-Var? What is The Emerald Chain?

Various elements of Trek’s past are referenced here. Katra Stones, which I assume are related to Katric Arcs; the latter relics were featured in Enterprise S04E07 “The Forge” & S04E08 “Awakening”. The Guardian of Forever, Psionic Effects of the Galactic Barrier (which was featured in 3 TOS episodes), Multi-Species Accelerated Evolution (TNG S06E20 “The Chase”), Subspace Divergence Fields (Voyager S02E21 “Deadlock”), The Omega Molecule (Voyager S04E21 “The Omega Directive”) and more.

Tig Notaro is back as Jett Reno.

237 Starfleet Academy S01E06 Come, Let’s Away

Admiral Vance is back. And there is another reference to the Discovery. Is this the same Discovery we’ve glimpsed before – or a later ship with the same name?

238 Starfleet Academy S01E07 Ko’Zeine

Jett Reno is back.

239 Starfleet Academy S01E08 The Life of the Stars

Mary Wiseman returns as Sylvia Tilly from Short Treks S01E01 “Runaway”, who knows Jett Reno, who is also back. At one point, they are referenced as the women that time forgot. What does this mean?

240 Starfleet Academy S01E09 300th Night (Part 1)

Dadmiral Vance and Jett Reno are back again. At one point, Ake tells Reno to “pull a Q’mau,” – what does this mean? And N’Var is apparently…Vulcan? Why the name change?

Jay-Den performs the R’uustai ritual with his fellow cadets; this was previously seen in TNG’s “The Bonding”. During the ritual they drink chech’tluth (a Klingon drink that was established in TNG’s “Up the Long Ladder”).

And the Omega molecule which was referenced several episodes ago and which originated in an excellent Voyager episode (S04E21 “The Omega Directive”) returns here.

241 Starfleet Academy S01E10 Rubincon (Part 2)

Oded Fehr as Charles Vance
Tig Notaro as Jett Reno

Jett Reno mentions having lived in two very different centuries? Nahla Ake asks Vance if Discovery can travel to the Athena via the “mycelial network”? What is that? There is an onscreen reference to Federation President Rillak?

A ship similar to Discovery can be seen at one moment in the episode but the nacelles aren’t attached. This must be a future ship given the same name. Or…I don’t know.
