“Star Trek: Lower Decks” is an American adult animated science fiction television comedy series created by Mike McMahan for the streaming service CBS All Access (later rebranded as Paramount+). The franchise’s first animated series since “Star Trek: The Animated Series” concluded in 1974, Lower Decks follows the low-ranking 24th century starship Cerritos support crew who were, per this viewing order, introduced in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S02E07 “Those Old Scientists”, with the series beginning before that adventure from the perspective of these characters. I’ll note when that crossover episode fits in here. But this is where the Lower Decks story truly begins, in the year 2380, 2 years after the end of Star Trek: Voyager and 1 year after the final Next Generation film, “Star Trek: Nemesis”.

Additionally, beginning with the end of Season 1, Star Trek: Lower Decks also features a social media companion series known as Star Trek: Lower Decks Logs, which consists of weekly personal logs of the crew of the USS Cerritos in short videos released to the social media website Instagram, nearly all of which tie into the previous episode of Lower Decks. The shorts often include essential information that really highlight the stories being told in the parent series. Later Trek series (“Prodigy”, “Picard” & “Discovery”) all feature a similar companion series. The Lower Decks Logs ran for 2 seasons.

This is where the SNW episode takes place from the point of view of Lower Decks. I’m counting it twice because it really does feel like a Lower Decks episode at this point. This story is later referenced in this series in the Season 4 premiere.

During the finale the Klingons morph between their current stage selves into versions of Klingons from the past. We know these are past Klingon variants because Relga and the crew on her ship transform into Proto-Klingons: the same type of creature into which Worf devolved in TNG S07E19 “Genesis”. But the Klingons on the IKS Krtas, as well as the ship itself, are transformed by the effects of the rift into something altogether new! When did the Klingons and their ships appear so different? Perhaps we’ll find out someday?
